Originating with just 14 members in the Rechabite Hall, Kadina, in 1900, the Church in the Copper Coast district rapidly established a dynamic and expanding community. Characterised by significant ceremonies, such as baptisms and notable services, as well as a robust spirit of fellowship, the church grew in both membership and influence through the appointment of deacons and the formation of committees dedicated to its ongoing development.
Despite initial challenges—including reliance on a rental hall that also served as a skating rink and often proved inadequate—the church maintained its activities and demonstrated resilience. The foundational work of committed ministers, particularly Mr G B Moysey and later E G Warren, contributed to the creation of a supportive and self-sustaining congregation.
The congregation’s dedication was demonstrated through numerous initiatives, including the organisation of tent missions which spurred further growth, the construction of new facilities such as Sunday School and kindergarten rooms, and the active participation of members in building projects. By 1918, the church roll had increased to 234, underscoring its integral role in the spiritual and social fabric of the local community.
Over time, the church evolved from a modest assembly into an established institution, offering fellowship, leadership, and a sense of belonging within the Copper Coast district. Its legacy is defined by resilience, community engagement, and adaptability, as evidenced by continual investments in both infrastructure and congregation development.
Throughout its history, the church has consistently supported local needs, directing proceeds from concerts, trading tables, dramas, and offerings back into the broader community. Numerous individuals—youth, women, and men alike—have benefitted from their involvement in the various auxiliaries offered over the years.
We are part of a larger body of churches known as Churches of Christ in South Australia and Northern Territory. It is a dynamic movement of locally led churches, peppered with faith-full believers who are both welcoming and adventurous. Over 170 years, the group has remained unified around a single purpose: following Jesus.
